In conjunction with AI Appreciation Day 2024, CHILD is proud to highlight three exemplary projects this month that showcase the transformative power of AI in healthcare.
These projects, drawn from public healthcare clusters across Singapore, not only exemplify the versatility and impact of AI in healthcare but also demonstrate how AI-driven innovation can enhance patient outcomes, streamline workflows, and empower healthcare professionals to focus on delivering exceptional care:
1. Through the use of explainable AI models, this inter-disciplinary team from Woodlands Health (WH), Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), AITI Solutions and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) developed an application for cost-effective and efficient analysis of wound images from an Asian cohort to support clinical decisions with 83% accuracy and 60% explainability. 2. Committed to reducing redundant CT studies which incur unnecessary cost, manpower, and radiation to the patient, National University Hospital developed a code-based solution using the Endeavor AI (EAI) platform, effectively translating to reduction in effort and time by 90%. [Winner of National Healthcare Innovation & Productivity (NHIP) 2024 – Best Practice (Automation, IT and Robotics category)]
3. By developing an efficient AI-based triage framework, this project by Health Services Research Centre and SingHealth Research enabled health workers in low resource settings to triage patients more effectively for head and neck cancers with more than 80% accuracy. 1. Equipped with offerings not typically associated with day care centres, such as hairdressing, therapeutic horticulture and a movie theatre, Oasis@Outram from HCA Hospice is redefining what it means to live meaningfully through a patient-centric and family-focused model of progressive care.

2. Committed to reducing falls among elderly residents, Econ Sunnyville Nursing Home (Yio Chu Kang) implemented staff training, falls care bundle and work processes review in 2022, drastically reducing fall rates by 62% and ensuring quality care is delivered to its residents.

3. By consolidating defect reporting channels and developing analytics dashboards, this project by NTUC Health transformed from a reactive working method of managing defects in its nursing home operations, to a proactive maintenance workflow, effectively reducing defects reporting downtime and enabling time savings.

1. Since 2020, JurongHealth Campus (JHC) has rolled out a campus-wide initiative to optimise water and energy efficiency, as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This initiative focuses on transforming JHC’s facilities to be more sustainable and resilient, while actively promoting environmental stewardship.

2. By reinventing food waste, repurposing plastics and reducing single-use disposables, CGH Food Services showcases how the healthcare sector can contribute to environmental sustainability while continuing to deliver high-quality nutrition for patients.

3. Through the process of re-creating sustainable last-mile solutions via resource optimisation, this project by Thye Hua Kwan Moral Charities Ltd: THK Elderly & Home Care Services not only achieved higher productivity, but also reduced mileage and carbon emissions.

Facilitated by CHI's Digital & Smart Health Office (DSHO), these projects in Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) present the future where automation is strategically driving excellence across diverse healthcare domains:
1. TTSH's Pharmacy Drug Management team witness a surge in productivity and precision, minimising errors and near misses; all whilst reducing Full-Time-Equivalent (FTE) for better resource allocation and achieving cost-effectiveness.
2. The Outpatient Pharmacy unit rides the RPA wave, emerging with heightened accuracy and efficiency as well as increased staff satisfaction as they are now able to redirect time towards meaningful patient interactions.
3. Over at the Operations, Workplace Health and Safety unit, RPA improves workflow efficiencies, liberating staff from manual and repetitive tasks to focus on elevating patient care.
These projects not only exemplify the versatility of RPA but also underlines its overarching impact on healthcare - reducing mundane tasks, preventing errors, and most importantly, empowering healthcare professionals to channel their energy towards enriching patient care experience.
